UPSC : Candidates who brought pride to the state

 Saturday spelt joy for at least 51 civil services aspirants in the State as the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) declared the final results of the Civil Services Examination (CSE), 2014. Karnataka made its presence felt in the results not only in the top 100, but also in top 10.

List of Union Public Service Commission Civil Services Toppers in Karnataka

1. Nitish., 8th rank
Nitish K, an engineering graduate from PES Institute of Engineering, Bengaluru, managed to feature in top 10 AIR list in his third attempt.
2. B. Fouzia Taranum., 31st Rank
A true blue Bengalurean, having been born and brought up here, 28-year-old Fouzia, who managed to earn herself the 31st rank in her third attempt, is already serving as an Assistant Commissioner in the Income Tax Department in Bengaluru.
She is the first IAS officer in her family. “My experience in IRS too has been amazing. The beauty of the job is there is so much diversity, I would like to work in as many different departments as possible and learn as I grow,” she said.
3. Balaji D.K., 36th Rank
Native of Koratagere, Tumakuru, 25-year-old Balaji hears enough comparison about sharing his initials with deceased IAS officer D.K. Ravi, who also happens to be from Kunigal, Tumakuru. “Many say I will carry his legacy forward,” he told The Hindu . This was his second attempt at the CSE, having failed to even get an interview call the first time around. Choosing not to work, he chose Kannada literature as his optional subject.

5. Srikanth H S., 56th rank
It was a dream come true for Srikanth H S, who has secured 56th rank in second attempt. He had worked with a central aerospace organisation.

7. R Srinivas Gowda 105th rank
“The only way to crack the exam is to prepare consistently” said Gowda, who closed down his event management firm to prepare for the UPSC exam. “In 2013, I made my first attempt, but failed in the preliminary round. In 2014, I was called for the interview, but missed the list by 19 marks. I am happy that I cracked the exams this time,” he said.
8. Ikramullah Mohammad Sharif., 111th Rank
9. Mithu Kumar G K., 130th Rank
“I am an engineering graduate and used to work for TCS. I quit the job in 2012 and began preparing for the civil services examination,” he said.
10. Arif Hafeez, 135th Rank
The engineering graduate from University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering kept engineering as a backup. But having a father, who is an IPS officer (retired DGP K. Hafeez), and a brother who is in railway service (Indian Railway Personnel Service), civil services was a natural calling. He made it to the interview stage in his first attempt in 2011, soon after he graduated. “I have grown up in the system. It doesn’t matter if I get to choose IAS or IPS; I will get to serve the people either way,” he said.
The 25-year-old never took up a job after getting an engineering degree as he wanted to put all his focus on preparing for the CSE, he said.

14. Keerthishree S., 380th rank
Keerthishree S said she was inspired by a friend to take up the exam while pursuing postgraduation in Urban Planning from IIT, Kharagpur.
“I prepared for four years. I took coaching at various centres in Delhi, Bengaluru and Tumakuru,” Keerthishree, an engineering graduate in Architecture, said, adding that she would make another attempt hoping to get a better rank.
15. Harikrishna., 408th Rank
Coming from an agriculture background, Harikrishna initially thought that he would be able to prepare for the examinations with his job in hand. It was in 2011 that he gave up his full-time job as a junior research fellow in Nimhans. “Then, I also worked part-time for a while and prepared for the exams,” said Harikrishna
16. PavanKumar G Giriyappanavar., 420th Rank
17. Mallikharjun V Mamani., 434th Rank
Mallikharjun V Mamani, who secured 434th rank, belongs to a powerful political family of North Karnataka region. His uncle Anand Mamani is the sitting MLA of Saundatti Yelamma constituency in Belagavi, while his father Rajanna Mamani had represented the constituency in 2004. “I have completed my B.E. in BVB college of Engineering. Immediately after the course I got offer from MindTree. But I did not accept it as cracking the Civil Services examination was my dream,” he said.
