Aloo- Tamatar Sabji (Potatoes in a tomato based gravy)


Here is the recipe of Aloo- Tamatar Sabji, an easy and simple recipe that goes well with roti, poori or rice.



  1. 3 Cubed potatoes
  2. 3 Chopped or pureed tomatoes
  3. 1 Chopped onion
  4. 1/2 teaspoon Ginger paste
  5. 1/2 teaspoon Garlic paste
  6. 1/2 teaspoon Cumin seeds
  7. 1/2 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  8. 1 pinch Asafoetida
  9. 1 teaspoon Chilli powder
  10. 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  11. 1 teaspoon Coriander powder to taste Salt
  12. 1 pinch Garam masala powder
  13. 3/4 cup Water
  14. 2 tablespoons Oil


  1. Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds.
  2. When they start to splutter, add asafoetida and stir for few seconds.
  3. Add the chopped onion, ginger- garlic pastes and potatoes.
  4. Saute for a couple of minutes.
  5. Add the turmeric, chilli powder, coriander powder and tomatoes along with salt.
  6. Mix well.
  7. Cover and cook till potatoes are almost done.
  8. Add water and mix well.
  9. Allow to cook till the potatoes are cooked through and you get a medium thick gravy.
  10. Sprinkle garam masala powder and mix well.
  11. Serve hot with rotis.
